What is REBA?
REBA — the Rapid Entire Body Assessment — is a postural analysis tool developed by Sue Hignett and Lynn McAtamney (2000) to evaluate the whole-body musculoskeletal risk of a working task. It is one of the most widely used ergonomic assessment methods in manufacturing, warehousing, healthcare and construction because it captures the trunk, neck and legs as well as the arms and wrists in a single, repeatable score.
REBA is designed for tasks that involve dynamic, unpredictable or heavy postures — exactly the kind of manual handling where whole-body strain matters. It gives safety and ergonomics professionals a fast, defensible number they can use to prioritise interventions and track improvement over time.
How REBA scoring works
The REBA worksheet is split into two body groups and combined through three lookup tables:
- Group A (trunk, neck, legs): each segment is scored for posture, with extra points for twisting, side-bending and knee flexion. Table A converts these into one value, and the load/force score is added to give Score A.
- Group B (upper arm, lower arm, wrist): scored on the more loaded arm, with adjustments for raised shoulders, abduction and wrist twist. Table B converts these into one value, and the coupling (grip quality) score is added to give Score B.
- Table C combines Score A and Score B, and a final activity score (for static holding, repetition or rapid changes) is added to produce the final REBA score from 1 to 15.

When to use REBA vs RULA
REBA and RULA are complementary. Choose REBA when the task involves the whole body — lifting, carrying, patient handling, or any job where the legs, trunk and posture change frequently. Choose RULA when the risk is concentrated in the upper limbs and neck, such as assembly lines, packing stations and computer work. When in doubt, run both: they share most inputs and together give a fuller picture of musculoskeletal risk.
Limitations of REBA
REBA is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. It captures a single snapshot posture, so for tasks with a wide range of postures you should assess the worst-case and most typical positions separately. It does not account for vibration, contact stress, temperature or the full duration of exposure, and scoring by eye introduces some subjectivity between assessors. Use REBA to prioritise and screen, then follow up high-risk tasks with a detailed ergonomic evaluation.
